About Dr. Belvy

Hi, I’m Lisa Belvy (she/her).

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (License #: PSY26645) with expertise in clinical health psychology. I obtained my Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed my Clinical Internship at the University of Illinois Medical Center. I did additional training as a Clinical Psychology Fellow at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Prior to opening my private practice, I served as the Lead Psychologist at the Martinez VA Primary Care Clinic. In this role, I organized a team of behavioral health providers as we provided therapy services to primary care patients, and consulted with medical staff. I developed and ran a successful wellness program for many years and created the clinic’s first LGBTQ+ support group. I served as a clinical supervisor for the Integrative Care and Behavioral Medicine Internship and Fellowship programs at the Northern California VA Healthcare System, and created a LGBTQ+ Health rotation. I helped spearhead an interdisciplinary pain committee which provided treatment recommendations for individuals with highly complex chronic pain presentations.

My therapy approach is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT, which involves looking at how our thoughts and behaviors influence our emotions and day to day life. I often incorporate mindfulness in my practice, as well as Motivational Interviewing, which helps to move clients toward better health. During therapy sessions I strive to create an atmosphere of kindness and warmth, authenticity and humor.

I specialize in health psychology, which means that I take a psychological approach to improving health and well-being, and work with clients who are experiencing health challenges. This includes chronic pain, insomnia, cancer, weight concerns/fat stigma, women’s health concerns, diabetes, hypertension, HIV, and many other health issues. I have specialized experience working with clients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorders.

I value working with clients of many different identities and backgrounds. This includes LGBTQIA+ individuals, Veterans, persons living with disabilities, clients of diverse ethnic/racial/religious/cultural backgrounds, and more. Together we can explore the challenges and strengths of being part of a marginalized group, and what it means to have privilege, as applicable. I am committed to non-discrimination and anti-racism, and strive to provide a welcoming and affirming therapy space.
